It was a busy and fun week, wrapping up with our Halloween celebrations! This is a simple, not-too-scary book that I thought would be just perfect for this week. Jan Brett is one of my favorite illustrators.

Our vocabulary word was growl. We practiced our growls and howls, so that the children could understand the difference.

Berto dressed up as a ghost!

Spooky!

…the eyes were cats!????! What a relief.

We talked about some of the Halloween characters we saw in the book:

We practiced for Halloween. Each child said “Trick or Treat” and then “Thank you” after getting a piece of candy.

Fun Halloween images on the projector:

My after school classes made these cute haunted houses:

They doubled as a treat bag.

We discussed how we could make our own haunted house at home. Maybe with a few stuffed animals, a dark room and a flashlight? We just used a dark room down the hall. Spooky! (And fun!).

Each child also received a special witch finger to use for reading.

I also made these ghost (and pumpkin – sorry not pictured) “stress balls”. I think our handwriting teacher would approve. They will build those muscles when they squeeze it.

They also worked perfectly to knock over ghost cups!

Boo from all of us at school!

… and from Berto too.
