Happy Lunar New Year. It is the year of the snake.
We started our Lunar New Year off with a parade! The kindergarten class built this amazing dragon, and our transitional kindergarten class built these fantastic lion heads.

Watch a little of the parade here:
I like this story because Chloe lives in the US. It shows the lovely way we homogenize here. They decide to add apple pie to their meal. Auntie Le’s husband is not Asian. He clearly enjoys the celebration and is a part of the family.

Our vocabulary word:

Cleaning and throwing out the old is a tradition of the Lunar New Year. The old gets replaced by the new.

“Good Luck Oranges”.

A feast is prepared.

All of the children can relate to coming together with family at the dinner table to celebrate. It is universal.

Another tradition in many cultures is to honor loved ones who have passed away.

So many of the children asked me what the “smoking thing’ was in the photo. I brought some incense to show them.

Family games! 🙂

Last year was the year of the Dragon. Next year will be the year of the Horse.

On the projector:

Each student received a lucky red envelope, with “B” bucks inside. I love the snakes on these.

Every year we do a collaborative dragon, made out of paper plates and tissue. The children love it, and are so proud to be a part of it.

We tasted rice noodles, dumplings and fried rice with our chopsticks during my after school classes. Don’t tell the children, but using these chopsticks are great for their fine motor skills. The rice was especially challenging, but fun.

Some loved the food, some did not.

We read a little about snakes (since it is their year) and then made these cute snakes.

We decided to have a Lunar New Year snake parade!

Beatrix and Berto wish you a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!
