The end of the year brings a special kind of chaos — high energy and excitement is in the air. This book seems like the perfect antidote: simple, gorgeous, and quietly calming amid all the buzz.
We started this book by listening to this robin singing near the window.

Even the older children liked to identify the colors. For the older students I had fun calling out the wrong color to make sure they were listening. It always gets their attention, and they were ready for my next mess up.
We also had fun identifying the birds they knew.

We counted to make sure there were seven birds on the wire.

Where did they go?

Where do birds go during a storm? The children gave me many answers. Some were hilarious, next time I will write them all down.

Our vocabulary word was pretend.

We pretended to be birds.

We also tried to sing like a bird.

I had a nest and feathers to show the children. (The eggs are not real).

We also had our own bird visits.

Look how big our chicks have gotten. They grow so fast in a week. My after school classes were thrilled to have some extra time with them.

We also made nests in the after school classes. We went outside and tried to think like a bird. “What do we need to gather to make a nest?”

We used air dry clay to make the base of the nest, and then added the things we collected. And little eggs.

We colored birds.

We also went bird watching. We found a few of the birds and a nest high up in a tree!

Print the bird watching guide here. To make it into a “book”, just laminate, cut and put on a ring.
