Happy Mother’s Day!
We have been celebrating all of the moms this week at school. What better story to read than this one — a beautiful reminder that love, care, and kindness make a mama – human or animal!
To all the mamas of every kind… we celebrate you. 💕

Steven Kellogg’s illustration include other mothers and babies on the pages. Notice the turtle nest with the eggs. On the next page, they have hatched.

Our vocabulary word: herd.

We talked about how all mamas take care of their babies (and yes, you will be your mama’s baby forever). They cuddle with us. They give us hugs. They carry us, and take us places.

They kiss us. They feed us. They keep us safe and warm.
Moms are the best, and we love them.

For the younger students, we talked about the animals in the story.

The older students loved these questions. A few were a little tricky if they were not listening. Like – what does a cow eat? So many of them said milk, until they took a minute to think about it.

This is not a llama, but I brought out an alpaca puppet for them to touch and talked about the difference between an alpaca and a llama. Alpacas have fur that is turned into fiber to make things like blankets, socks, and sweaters. It is so soft. Llamas are taller and have bigger ears.

I have a friend who has a llama. His name is Marcel. I took videos and photos to show to the children.

During my after school classes, we talked about what our moms were good at. Most agreed their mom was good at all of it!

We know – our mama is not a llama. But we love her – so we drew some pictures for her.

We also matched the babies with the mamas. Each student took these cards home, to color and play with later.

Berto and Cheesecake (the alpaca) say HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
