BRINGING IN THE NEW YEAR…

IT IS THE YEAR OF THE TIGER!

We started off our week of celebrating the Lunar New Year, or in our case the Chinese New Year, with a parade!

The Kindergarten class made this amazing dragon, and the TK class made this fantastic Chinese lion. Impressive right?

The whole school really enjoyed the parade. You can find video on my Instagram account.

In this book, we followed along with a Chinese family and learned about their traditions.

Our vocabulary word this week was dumpling. Who wants to eat dumplings with me?

The family dresses up for the new year and gets ready for a feast. We can see in the illustrations that they use chopsticks. All of the children here at school used chopsticks in their classes this week too. Such a wonderful and fun way to work on small motor skills, while connecting to all that they have learned this week.

My lion is not as scary…

In the picture in the book above, notice all of the children are holding red envelopes. “Lucky red envelopes” are a tradition and usually have money inside.

This is our collaborative dragon for this year. Each child paints and decorates a plate, which we then string into a dragon.

The children always love looking at this calendar. We all agree that we think Beatrix will probably be pretty excited for next year!

For my after school classes, we made “dancing dragons” and then had a parade with them. We also did “chopstick math” with gummy bears.

A few of the children really enjoyed the “match game” with Chinese numbers:
