I use sounds from Spotify to add to this story. A fire alarm, the sound of a fire engine, the sound of a dog barking and the sound of glass breaking (when he uses his ax to break the window). It really seems to pull the children into the story. They especially love to follow the fire engine(with the sound) on the map below, from the fire station to the fire.
“Firefighter week” is a great time to talk about fire safety. We talk about what is safe to touch, and what is not. We talk about 911, we talk about “Stop, drop and roll”. We also talk about EXIT signs and fire extinguishers. It is fun for the children to find them around our school.
Of course I have fire engines playing on the projector as the children come into the library…
My after school class were firefighters. When they heard the alarm, they had to get up quickly, crawl below the smoke and fire, and then put it out!
We also went on an “EXIT sign hunt” and a “fire extinguisher hunt”.
Print these sheets and find some Exit signs and fire extinguishers (can your child find the upside down ones?):
We are lucky to have an extra classroom that a few of our teachers turned into a “community helper room”. What a great learning experience.
Of course the highlight of the week was the visit from the real firefighters and their truck.
Thank you to the Sandy Spring Fire Department for coming to visit us!
Here is a tour of this truck:
“Fireman Beatrix” approves!
