I like to start this book asking about this picture. What season is it? How do you know? Do you see footprints in the snow? Who could they belong to? Is that a cave? Could a bear be sleeping in it? And then we can talk a little about hibernation.

Our vocabulary word:

It would be fun to bring out some popcorn and tea for this page.

Can you believe the bear still has not woken up?

UH OH!

It is a little scary, but sure keeps their attention.

Why is he sad?

A cute ending!

There was a bear hibernating in the library! When will it wake up?

On the projector:

My after school classes made caves (with snow) for our Bear Snores On characters:

Hopefully the children will retell the story at home with these:

Here is a coloring page for the story:
We read this book about a bear hibernating:

We then pretended to be hibernating bears.

When we heard the birds chirping, we slowly crawled out, yawned and stretched, then foraged for food.

We found some delicious treats!

We then read this (an all time favorite):

We went on a bear hunt. Through the long wavy grass, the river, the mud, the forest and the snowstorm. When we tip toed into the cave, we found a bear! We ran back to the library and hid under a blanket!
