THE VERY BUSY SPIDER by Eric Carle

This book seemed like the perfect choice for Halloween and the rest of the week. The book has a calming cadence to it, which is nice around Halloween time when children are either exhausted or so excited they can barely sit still. It also gave us a chance to talk about spiders.

After the story, each child had to figure out how to get across our own spider web. This is such a great problem solving activity, some of the children had to try and fail (which just makes it even more fun):

We watched a spider building his web on the projector:

In the Maker Space room next door, the children worked on building spider webs and feeling the tension of it:

We had even more spider fun during my after school class. We read about spiders, we made spiders (even though we learned after reading our book they are not anatomically correct), and we went outside in search of spiders and spider webs.

Another Beatrix approved book…
